What is an ACL Tear or Injury?

Types of ACL Injuries / Sprains

  • Grade 1
Causes mild ligament damage. The ligament is slightly stretched but still capable of keeping the knee joint stable.

  • Grade 2
The sprain stretches the ligament until it becomes loose, commonly referred to as a partial ligament tear.

  • Grade 3
The sprain is a complete tear of the ligament, resulting in an unstable knee joint.

ACL partial tears are uncommon; most ACL injuries are complete or nearly complete tears.

The ACL (Anterior cruciate ligament) is one of the key bands of tissue that connect the femur (thigh bone) to the tibia (shin bone) at the knee joint. Approximately half of all anterior cruciate ligament injuries occur alongside damage to other structures in the knee, such as the articular cartilage, meniscus, or other ligaments.

How are ACL Injuries treated?

Treatment for ACL injuries may encompass a combination of rest, rehabilitation exercises, and potentially surgery, depending on the injury's severity.

Following surgery, our physiotherapists will guide you through the initial stages of recovery, focusing on regaining knee motion and introducing gentle exercises to promote strength and stability. Emphasis will be placed on achieving full knee extension and managing swelling through increased blood flow.

After surgery, physiotherapy sessions typically look like…

  • First few weeks

Reduce pain and swelling and commence small range of motion exercises.

  • After this

Increase range-of-motion exercises and progress to weight-bearing exercises.

  • Month 3-4

Ramp up functional exercises in preparation for straight line jogging.

  • 6 months and beyond

Increase conditioning, change-in-direction exercises etc. and start building the foundation to return to sport.
